Your eyesight is one of your most valuable senses, yet many eye conditions develop gradually and without obvious symptoms. By the time vision changes become noticeable, some conditions may already have caused permanent damage. The good news is that regular eye examinations and preventative eye care can help detect problems early and protect your long-term vision.
As optometrists, one of the most common things we hear from patients is, “My vision seems fine, so do I really need an eye test?” The answer is yes. Eye examinations are about much more than checking whether you need glasses. They are an important part of maintaining your overall eye health.
Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about eye conditions and preventative eye care.
“Many serious eye conditions can develop without symptoms, which is why regular eye examinations are one of the most important steps you can take to protect your long-term vision.”
Several eye conditions become more common as we age, while others can affect people of any age. Some of the most frequently diagnosed conditions include:
Glaucoma: It is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can damage the optic nerve without causing noticeable symptoms in its early stages. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss. Regular eye examinations are critical as glaucoma can often be detected before vision is affected.
Cataracts: A cataract occurs when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. This can cause blurred vision, increased sensitivity to glare, and difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts develop gradually and are a common part of ageing; modern surgical treatments are highly effective.
Macular degeneration: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the central part of the retina, the macula. It can impact activities such as reading, driving and recognising faces. Early detection allows for better monitoring and management of the condition.
Diabetic retinopathy: People with diabetes are at increased risk of developing this condition, which damages the retina’s blood vessels. Early stages often have no symptoms, making routine eye examinations essential for anyone with diabetes.
Dry eye disease: Dry, irritated or watery eyes may seem like a minor inconvenience, but they can impact comfort and vision quality. Dry eye disease is increasingly common due to screen use, environmental factors and ageing.
Absolutely. Many serious eye conditions have no obvious symptoms in their early stages. Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration can all progress before you notice any changes in your vision. This is one of the key reasons preventative eye care is so important. Advanced diagnostic technology allows us to identify subtle changes within the eye long before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis often leads to better treatment outcomes.
Eye examinations are just as important as a regular GP check-up. For most adults, a comprehensive eye examination every one to two years is highly recommended. If you’re over 65, have diabetes, wear contact lenses or have experienced recent changes in your vision, you may require more frequent monitoring.
One of our qualified optometrists will recommend a testing schedule based on your individual needs and risk factors.
Modern eye examinations are sophisticated and extend way beyond reading letters on a chart. During your appointment at Ian Donald Optometrist, we assess:
Advanced imaging technology allows us to examine structures deep within the eye, helping detect issues that may not be visible during a standard examination.
Preventative eye care focuses on identifying potential problems before they impact vision. Many eye conditions respond best when diagnosed early, often before symptoms occur. Regular eye examinations can help:
Just as you visit your dentist or GP for routine check-ups, regular eye examinations are an investment in your long-term health.
While many conditions develop silently, there are certain symptoms that require prompt attention, including:
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek professional eye care as soon as possible.
Alongside regular eye examinations, there are several simple steps you can take to support healthy vision, such as wearing quality UV-protective sunglasses outdoors, maintaining a healthy diet rich in leafy greens and omega-3 fatty acids, managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure if required, and avoiding smoking and taking regular breaks from digital screens.
“A comprehensive eye examination is about more than seeing clearly today; it’s about detecting potential problems early and preserving your sight for the future.”
Many eye conditions can develop without warning, but regular comprehensive eye examinations can detect and manage problems early.
If it has been more than two years since your last eye examination, or if you’re experiencing any changes in your vision, booking a comprehensive eye health assessment is a proactive step towards preserving your sight and overall health.

Ian Donald had a vision.
He was going to become a dentist. It seemed like a good plan, until his careers adviser gave him a brochure on optometry. It opened up a whole new world. The eye intrigued him. It fascinated him. Optometry captivated him. And so his whole focus changed.
Ian went on to do work experience in the very office he owns today. While studying Optometry at the prestigious UNSW, he spent hours working in that same office, doing all the things no one else wanted to do. Filing. Filing. Filing.
Learning, learning, learning. It’s part of who he is.
Even today he is constantly training and retraining, studying and staying up to date with the latest technology in eye health.
So what else energises Ian?
‘Riding my bike, being part of the community, and helping people see. It gives me the best feeling possible. We take it for granted, because we do it all day, every day. It’s such a gift to be able to give people peace of mind.’ Read More
