Essilor Varilux X Series lenses

We live in a connected world, 24/7. We scroll our phones for worldwide news every hour, send pictures to our loved ones or check emails on the go. Our society has evolved, and so have our visual habits.

Now, we need to optimise our vision according to this new lifestyle. And Essilor is one step ahead, redefining the challenge of near vision, without compromise.

Learning from history for a clearer tomorrow

Since the 13th century, humans have needed visual assistance. Italian monks developed a semi-spherical lens made of rock crystal and quartz that magnified letters on a piece of writing. Eureka!

Known as the “reading stone”, this significantly improved people’s quality of life, and thus began the evolution of optical lenses as we know them today.

Essilor has been leading the charge for modern optical lenses since the late ‘50s. In fact, they pioneered the first pair of progressive lenses the world has ever seen!

In 1959, Bernard Maitenaz, a young optical and mechanical engineer, created the first progressive lens and named it Varilux. This marked the starting point of Essilor’s groundbreaking innovation for optical lenses.

Why helping eyes to work better is vital

It’s easy to marvel at the way optical lenses have improved over time. But why do we need progressive lenses? Let’s unpack it a bit further…

Starting at around age 40, your eyes gradually lose the ability to focus on nearby objects or you might have difficulty reading in dim light. This common eye condition is called presbyopia, and is a natural part of aging that will eventually affect you no matter how good your vision was when you were younger.

The eye’s soft and flexible crystalline lens hardens over time, making it difficult for the eye to focus light onto the retina and see objects clearly up close.

While bifocal lenses exist, they only allow you to clearly see far away and up close. Objects at arm’s length will still appear blurry. Additionally, there is an abrupt change between the near and far viewing areas.

But Varilux progressive lenses provide sharp vision and smooth transitions at any distance.

And that’s where Varilux steps in to solve the natural problem of aging…

Revealing a better range of vision

Varilux progressive lenses provide sharp vision at every distance – even in dimly lit conditions – eliminating the blurriness and low-light issues of ordinary progressive lenses.

Unlike bifocals or ordinary progressive lenses, only Varilux progressive lenses help you achieve the most natural vision possible.

Varilux progressive lenses feature W.A.V.E. Technology, which virtually removes tiny imperfections caused by the curvature of a lens surface. The result eliminates blurriness, providing superior sharp vision.

Varilux X Series, innovation at its clearest

The Varilux X Series, featuring Xtend Technology, is the most advanced progressive lens available. In addition to providing sharp vision and smooth transitions at any distance, it extends your vision within arm’s reach, so you no longer have to tilt or angle your head to find your focus. What a sweet spot!

It also uses revolutionary Nanoptix Technology to virtually eliminate that off-balance feeling, so you can feel more confident on the go.

Wish your eyes could focus more quickly when moving from one point to another? Varilux X Series includes 4D Technology, giving you a personalised measurement for your dominant eye.

Whether at work with a computer, using a smartphone or tablet screen or simply reading the newspaper, the Varilux X Series range pushes the boundaries of innovation to bring you sharp, more natural vision with smooth transitions from near to far.
