Pachymetry

The measurement of corneal thickness

At Heming Scott & Donald, it is important for us to keep up with the latest and best technology in eye care and diagnosis. Our latest piece of diagnostic equipment is a Pachymeter, which measures the thickness of the cornea.

When it seems indicated, we can now accurately measure the corneal thickness of your eyes. The cornea is the transparent part at the front of the eye that covers the iris, pupil and anterior chamber.

Corneal thickness is measured using a small ultrasonic probe. The probe briefly touches the apex of the anaesthetised eye. It is a very quick test, giving instant readings.

Corneal thickness measurement can be important for:

  1. Aiding in the detection or possible risk of glaucoma. Variations in corneal thickness can affect measurements of intraocular pressure (pressure within the eye).
  2. Assessment for suitability for laser refractive surgery, to ensure there is sufficient corneal thickness to prevent abnormal bulging out of the cornea (ectasia) after surgery.
  3. Determining whether the cornea is swelling through fluid build up. Contact lens wearers, especially those using extended wear lenses, may need corneal thickness measurements for this reason.
