Digital retinal photographsAging of the eyesAs people age, their vision becomes less acute. A common condition is called age-related macular degeneration, or ARMD, in which the macula portion of the retina deteriorates. This is the leading cause of blindness in those 60 and over. ARMD affects one's central vision, causing things to look slightly distorted, blurry or washed out. Although there is no proven cure, early detection and treatment of retinal changes may minimise the severity. DiagnosisAs a means to this end, Heming Scott & Donald Optometrists offer and recommend digital retinal imaging as part of their eye examination, above and beyond Medicare. Nothing touches the eye during this painless procedure, and patient comfort is kept a priority. The equipment produces a high quality colour digital image of the retina, instantly displaying it on a high-resolution monitor that can be used to detect the earliest stages of retinal change. This ensures that clinical information is comprehensive and facilitates the proper diagnosis of a wide range of eye disease. Along with ARMD, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and diabetic retinopathy are some of the other common eye diseases that the imaging system is helpful in identifying and tracking over time. The digital retinal photographs also enable us to detect early signs of conditions such as hardening of the arteries, blood pressure and cholesterol. |
