At Heming, Scott & Donald, we have over 145 years of consulting experience between us.

There's more to us than meets the eye

When we look into your eyes, it's like looking through a window into your body. This kind of  "inside view" that we get enables us to detect early symptoms of conditions like hardening of the arteries, diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol. We can also get early detection of eye-specific conditions like glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. With these, as with most medical conditions, the earlier you pick it up, the more you can do about it.

An eye examination at our practice usually includes:

• automatic refractor

• digital retinal photographs

• computerised visual fields

• corneal mapping

• tonometry (measuring the pressure of the eye)

• eye co-ordination

• suitability of contact lenses / refractive surgery

We recommend that you have your eyes examined every year. To help you organise this, we'll send you a reminder or we can book your next year's appointment when you see us.

What can I expect from a consultation?

Procedure

On your arrival at Heming, Scott & Donald, one of our friendly receptionists will greet you and record your personal details.

Then we review your past history and begin the pre-testing examination and preliminary prescription recommendations. This pre-testing obtains valuable information to allow your optometrist to gain a better and more accurate understanding of the condition of your eyes.

Following pre-testing, your Optometrist will examine your eyes for vision and general health. This includes refraction, which measures the optics of your eyes so your Optometrist knows the exact prescription that you require.

After that, you move on to the dispensing of your spectacles, contact lenses or a combination of both. Our Optical Dispensers will provide their extensive expertise in this area to ensure you have the best correction and also look great.
